This is the album that brought Bossa Nova to America. I'm not a big fan of vocals in my jazz, so the simple combination of Stan's smooth tone on sax mixed with Charlie's cool, fingerstyle guitar makes this album preferable to me to even the Getz/Gilberto collaboration, which many would argue is more definitive of the sub-genre. Highlights of this album are Desafinado, of course, and One Note Samba.

Guitarist Charlie Byrd was invited to travel and play in Brazil during a cultural goodwill tour sponsored by the Kennedy administration in 1961. He was completely enamoured by the music, and when he returned, he headed straight for the recording studio to make the now classic Jazz Samba. Collaborating with Stan Getz on tenor sax and backed by a band that included Gene Byrd (bass, guitar), Keter Betts (bass), and Buddy Deppenschmidt and Bill Reichenbach (drums), Byrd forged a new and brilliant sound. American record companies were to churn out hundreds of watered bossa-pop albums that have since given the style its lounge-addled image, but this album stands as a tribute to the vitality and adaptability of jazz.

The words bossa nova are often synonymous with the name Stan Getz. But North Americans might not have ever known the bright sound of bossa nova had it not been for Charlie Byrd. In 1961 Byrd returned from a tour of South America, where bossa nova music was thriving. The style was the invention of singer Joao Gilberto and songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim -- an adaptation of infectious Brazilian samba rhythms with the harmonic structures and "cool" surface of West Coast jazz. Byrd brought back records for Getz to hear, they planned a session, and the result was Jazz Samba -- the first album of true bossa nova music by jazz artists and the one that broke the bossa nova wave in 1960s America.
