Bike Ride 2

Folks using the Bike Trail around the lake: A restatement of the obvious for the apparently oblivious:

  • For you walkers - share the trail. We bikers don't own the trail, and we are happy to share the trail with joggers, rollerbladers, and walkers. However, if you want to walk 4 abreast, be aware of what's going on around you! If you see a bike coming up behind you, or you hear someone say "On Your Left!!!", make a hole, for crying out loud.
  • Do not stop in the middle of the trail to have a conversation. Move off to the side, where I won't accidentally run you down.
  • When blocking the trail to have your conversation, do not move to the left when a biker approaches. That's where he is going to pass you. If you move to the left, you will, in all likelyhood, be mowed down.
  • Bikers: Announce yourself when passing other bikers. Specifically, if a considerate biker has been forced to stop in order to avoid mowing down a couple of chatting walkers who are blocking the entire path, do assume he will be passing them on the left as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Do not assume he will remain stationary while you pass HIM. He is actually interested in moving, which is why he is on a bicycle. It is very unlikely that his peripheral vision extends beyond 180 degrees, so he doesn't know you are behind him. If you insist on passing him (because you HAVE to be first, I guess), the least you can do is announce yourself. That's "on your left" BEFORE you pass, not "Whoa!" AS you pass, AFTER you see him moving into the left lane. Moron.
  • You guys with the recumbant bikes - man you look sharp! Is that fun or what? Let me try one some day.
  • Rollerbladers: you all look so good. Are you all in shape before taking up the sport, or does skating on rollerblades make you instantly thin?
  • Dog owners: if your pet fouls the path, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I'm begging you, move it off into the grass. Otherwise, it's like a landmine, and I'm not interested in wearing a brown stripe up my back.

Here endeth the rant. Have a nice day.
